Janet and her late husband Ed Gonzalez moved around quite a bit before settling down in Florida where they began investing in their son’s future. Janet and Ed always knew they’d want to become entrepreneurs and retire in Florida, however, they weren’t sure which franchise would be the best investment as they neared retirement age. With Janet’s background in staff-training and banking and Ed’s background in management and finance, they knew they were a force to be reckoned with. “Our expertise in staffing and management allowed us to be successful from day one,” Janet said.
In addition to Janet and Ed’s expertise, Chris, skilled in marketing and sales, eventually joined their team as Center Director. Since joining the family business in 2011, Chris has enhanced their Huntington franchise in several ways. He’s been instrumental in increasing brand awareness by connecting with teachers at the local schools, utilizing social media marketing, capitalizing on the marketing provided by Huntington Learning Center’s corporate team and so much more.
Operating a Tutoring Franchise as a Mother-Son Duo
Upon the passing of Ed, Chris and Janet grew closer as they continued to own and operate their successful tutoring franchise. They’ve found happiness in being able to work and win together. “Being able to work with family is a great reward. Whenever there’s a success it’s more fun to celebrate with family,” admitted Chris.
While Chris works as the Center Director, Janet wears many hats as the franchise owner but, one of the most important parts of her job is hiring. Hiring the best individuals at a tutoring franchise is pertinent because parents are expecting to see results. A passion for children’s education, the urge to make a difference and a positive attitude are the three main characteristics that Janet looks for when hiring teachers and tutors. Surrounding herself with like-minded faculty and staff has been one of the biggest contributors to the success of her franchise.
Although Janet and Chris have been very successful throughout the years, they faced new challenges at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Thanks to the Huntington corporate team, they were able to begin virtual learning for their students and enroll additional students outside of their service area. As they continue adapting to the evolving world, they’re looking forward to continuing their efforts to cater to the needs of their students while creating generational wealth for their family members.
