Today, we are taking it all the way back to 1977 to talk a little about our origin story. Rooted in their passion for helping struggling students who needed tutoring help, founders Eileen and Ray Huntington recognized the need for quality tutoring. So they made it their mission to help all students get the best education possible.
Prior to Huntington Learning Center, there was a large gap when it came to students finding academic tutoring help outside of the school and home. What we now consider a typical amenity, brick-and-mortar tutoring locations didn’t exist. But the Huntington’s changed that.
Eileen, a tenured teacher, and Ray, a senior business analyst for a Fortune 100 company, put their skills together to open the first tutoring center in Oradell, NJ. With their unique combination of teaching and business qualifications, the couple began to make a huge difference in the lives of students who struggled in the educational system.
Their newly established company not only helped students but was a profitable business. The couple saw this as a lucrative opportunity to scale and began franchising in 1985.
Over the years since the first center opened, Huntington Learning Center has seen tremendous success. It has expanded rapidly, leading the country as the top national tutoring and test prep provider with approximately 300 locations in 40 states across the United States.
And the proof is in the students. Huntington Learning Center tutored students have earned a collective $187 million in scholarship offers, and earned significant increases in their ACT and SAT test scores, and on average improved two levels in math and reading.
Still a family-owned business, Huntington Learning Center is just as passionate about helping students today as it was in 1977and equally as passionate about helping their franchisees grow and succeed in their businesses. Eileen and Ray also welcomed their daughter, Anne Huntington Sharma, into the family business as President in 2019.
