Owner of four Huntington Learning Center franchise centers opens up about the impact he has on his students’ lives
Greg Kulander has been passionate about education his entire life. In fact, the majority of his life has been spent in pursuing education to the highest level, teaching at the university level, and specializing in education in both the private and nonprofit sectors.
Now as a multi-unit franchise owner with Huntington Learning Center, Greg has spent the last seven years impacting the lives of thousands of students, boosting their grades and their confidence, and helping them create a brighter future for themselves and their families.
This is his story:
What were you doing before you became a franchise owner with Huntington Learning Center?
Kulander: I’ve had four careers. I started my career as an academic. I hold a PhD in Chinese Language and taught at the university level for several years. I spent 20 years living abroad in Europe and China, where I worked in the private sector. When I came back to the United States, I went into the nonprofit sector and focused on the link between school and work, the reason behind why kids are in school. It was during this time that I realized how dire the education experience was and how many kids needed help. It was overwhelming. I wanted to do something that would help kids from an early age so that they could get ahead in life. That’s when I discovered Huntington Learning Center – and I haven’t looked back.
Why did you choose Huntington Learning Center over other brands in the space?
Kulander: Huntington Learning Center is just the best – it really is. The other brands weren’t robust enough to me. They didn’t have the quality of teachers or the programs that can deliver the results that students need. Let’s face it, Huntington Learning Center is a band-aid for the issues that we’re facing in education in this country, but it’s a really good one. We need 10,000 Huntington Learning Centers open across the country to solve the problem – the problem is that big.
What makes Huntington Learning Center so effective in helping students improve?
Kulander: We don’t just think about grades. We think about self-confidence. If you’re lacking in self-confidence, your future is going to be very limited. The education system is designed to break kids down and Huntington Learning Center builds them back up again. We make them feel like they can achieve their dreams. They discover that hard work, which is what we do at HLC, works! It’s amazing what a few hours of tutoring can do.
How many students have you helped since you opened the doors to your first center?
Kulander: Thousands. It’s hard to imagine the impact that we have. Our teachers are incredible people and they really deserve the credit. They go above and beyond – let me give you an example. Since September, one of my centers has helped 191 students and we’ve provided 7,034 hours of tutoring – this is just one center! The impact that we’re having is incredible.
With so many students behind from a full year of learning from home, why is Huntington Learning Center an important business to own?
Kulander: I cannot tell you how many parents have come up to me and said, “Without Huntington Learning Center, my child would have been completely lost.” The demand for our services is exploding and this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to help change lives.
